Sonic Colors is overrated. Sonic Forces was overhated, it's not good but it isn't as bad as 06. Sonic Mania isn't really replayable, sure it's really good but it also has really few original zones. Also Encore Mode sucks. I'd argue that Forces is worse than 06, because 06 at least has some value, while Forces is just soulless and mediocre in literally every department (including music)

Some hot takes: Sonic Labyrinth is an alright game. Knuckles Chaotix is a good game, but not as good as the other Sonic games

Sonic Mania is a very lazy game I've seen more people slam and dunk on Mania in the last year than in 2017-2021. Where you Mania detractors were hiding all this time!?
I think Mania was lazy in bringing back old levels. This is and will always be my main gripe with Mania, bringing back too many old levels we've seen before and not having enough original zones. If they decided to reuse obscure levels like Lava Powerhouse from Sonic Spinball (God, I'd kill for a Tee Lopes remix of this level's theme) or Silver Castle from Sonic Blast, I would cut Mania some slack for reusing old levels. But nah, let's bring back levels from the games everybody has played.
Mania isn't lazy in any other field, though. The game is visually stunning, the OST is top notch, and the level design is on par with Sonic 3's open, exploration-inducing level design. Which is good.

It was Sonic Team who suggested the addition of old levels in Mania Originally only the 4 original ones were planned iirc

Takashi Iizuka was the one who suggested to recycle older levels for the game. I believe it was a choice of the main development team to actually do it since apparently Iizuka merely suggested the idea, but it was a pretty dumb move to make the bulk of the game stuff we've seen a thousand times before regardless of who's responsible for it. Lava Reef with Quartz Quadrant's treadmills and Metallic Madness' walking platform things aren't the most mind blowing additions people could think of, they're not even entirely new mechanics. This decision was pointless and doesn't help the game in any way.

Here are my hot takes:
- Sonic 1 is better than Sonic 2 because the level design is more polished and fair even if the pacing is arguably less consistent. - Sonic 3 isn't just better than Sonic 2, it's a replacement in almost every way. - Sonic CD is simultaneously overrated and overhated, sure it has its positives which definitely deserve praise but the execution left me wanting something more polished. - Sonic 1 has the best looking pixel art out of the classic games. Sonic 2's art style is just a jankier version of Sonic 1's art style imo - Sonic and Knuckles is a better standalone game than Sonic 3 Alone. - Knuckles' Chaotix's tether ring mechanic could've been an awesome mechanic in single player if they polished the controls. - Sonic 3D Blast is a good game, it's just that people are playing it like as if it's a Sonic game and not a Flicky game. - Sonic CD takes place after Sonic 3 & Knuckles. - Sonic Xtreme would've been a terrible game if it released, and it would've been a stain on the franchise at the very least. - Sonic Adventure 1 is better in every way than Sonic Adventure 2 (excluding music, it's even in that area imo), and it understands Sonic's design philosophy much more. - If Sonic were to keep using the adventure/modern design philosophy, they should've kept changing 2D art styles instead of sticking with the same one. - Sonic Heroes could've been better than Adventure 1 if they improved the mechanics and level design (along with making the team mechanic optional). - Sonic 06 is terrible. This is a hot take now. - Boost formula should've never been in the mainline series; it should've stayed a handheld spinoff series. - Werehog is sluggish for no reason other than to pad out the game when cutscenes show a much faster pace. - The boost formula always finding ways to pad out the game is proof that the gameplay formula can't stand on its own two legs in a mainline game, at least with the way it has been designed since Unleashed. - Sonic Mania was mid, and S1 and S3 are better games than it because those games are more developed. - Sonic Frontiers has worst boost gameplay than Sonic Forces (for the most part), and the boost feels tacked on. - I believe the best way forwards for the series is to combine momentum gameplay with the large maps of Sonic Frontiers and less automation to finally give sonic fans the freedom they've been missing for years.

- Sonic 3D Blast is a good game, it's just that people are playing it like as if it's a Sonic game and not a Flicky game. lol, 3D Blast really is pretty reminiscent of the original Flicky game. I never noticed this until you pointed it out. - Sonic Xtreme would've been a terrible game if it released, and it would've been a stain on the franchise at the very least. Agreed. The game relied on a fish-eye camera, and while this kind of camera was necessary for the players to see where they were going and what they were doing, I believe the game wouldn't age well mainly because of it. Sonic's acceleration looks very off too, he leaves the camera behind if he runs in a straight line for half a second. This game feels clumsy and awkward based on the available footage alone. It's a shame the Saturn didn't get a mainline Sonic game. But even if it got it, the result would be Sonic Xtreme, which wouldn't be ideal.

Just curious to see what are some of y'alls hot takes in the series. I'll list some of mine: - I'm not a big fan of Sonic & all stars racing transformed and I think the first game was much better
- Sonic Heroes isn't good and the only people who like it played it when they were 6
- Sonic 06 is better than sonic forces
- Sonic Unleashed>Sonic Generations
- Sonic Lost World is decent & probably better than colors
Lemme know if your takes are worse than mine!
Imma add one more: Super Sonic isn't that cool (at least in terms of using him, not design).

According to a dude in the Sonic Retro forums, at least. This is not a hot take I agree with, but it's still a hot take. It has its place in this thread. Besides, it's an interesting read.
