In Sonic 3 alone, if you try loading into Zone ID $0D, it leads to garbage data and many palette problems like Sky sanctuary and can't even be completed. The interesting thing about is that it originally was a 6th Competition mode stage. For example: - There are 6 stages with the 6th taking you to the Gumball bonus game. - A unused theme is present in the Nov. 3 proto and the pc re-release(which is the blue sphere results music) which can work for a stage. - This is internally next the Competition mode stages Since the stages are in alphabetical order, what would you name this elusive stage (It has to start with the letter F). I would call it Final Raceway Zone, and also, it would look very Rainbow Road-like.

Source: tcrf.net/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_3I definitely never felt that the unused theme worked as a super theme but wasn't aware of the theory it was a cut Competition stage theme! It seems designed for looping and is a simple tune like the others, which should have been a clue. I think the unused theme has some other clues, such as it (from my ears) having instrumental and melodic similarities with the Slot Machine stage theme. The 2P Bonus stages themselves seem to be vaguely referential to Sonic 3K Zones, or perhaps Sonic 2 in the sense that Sonic 3 is a lot of what was lost from the much longer original concept for Sonic 2. Thank you for bringing this up! I'm inspired now to dig more into Sonic 3 Development Lore. I'm going to guess the lost theme was Ice-based and could reuse the assets from other zones - Frozen Ruins or Frozen Cave

Source: tcrf.net/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_3the level select thing in sonic 3 alone may just be because they were likely too lazy to make a more complicated layout for the level select (this level select is drawn over the sonic 2 one iirc) there is no evidence id 0D was a competition mode zone (not to mention its id is before the others, not after) based on the music id placement of the unused track its more likely it was for a menu screen (competition results perhaps)

However, I do observe some interesting similarities between the competition zones and the original Sonic 3 level concepts, the biggest one being Balloon Park and Neon / Carnival Night Zone which has a massive Ferris Wheel near the boss area - something Balloon Park has while Carnival Night does not.
